MATA SCORES IN FINAL GAME

Spanish midfielder Juan Manuel Mata celebrated the occasion of his final Premier League game for Manchester United with the winning goal in the 2-1 win at Wolves on the final game of this season at the weekend. Mata is expected to leave the club next month at the end of his contract with the Red Devils. The Spaniard has been at Manchester United for almost a decade following his big money move from Premier League rivals Chelsea in January 2014.

Mata started a Premier League game for the first in months as part of a much changed Manchester United line-up ahead of the away game against Wolves. The 33-year-old Spanish international scored the winning goal for Manchester United from the penalty spot afterRomainSaiss was adjudged to have fouled Dutchman Donny Van de Beek in the penalty box. Centre referee Mike Dean didn’t award the spot kick until he was sent to the monitor by VAR. Mata scored the second Manchester United in the fourth minute of added time at the end of the first half.

Manchester United had earlier taken the lead courtesy 19-year-old forward Anthony Elanga after good work from Wales national team winger Daniel James. Elanga scored his first Premier League goal with 13 minutes on the clock. The Red Devils were good value for the lead that lasted until six minutes from the half-time interval when Portuguese international Nelson Semedo scored the equaliser for Wolves before the penalty strike from Mata just before the end of the first half. The two teams were scoreless in the second half as the Red Devils wrapped up their Premier League campaign with a win.

On the future of Mata, Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaertold reporters that the club is still discussing with the player. Manchester United have the option to extend his contract for another year.
