The former Manchester United striker blamed the congested fixture list and the recent protest from fans as the reasons behind the poor form. The Red Devils have lost three of their last four games in all competitions including the last two games in the Premier League.

The poor run started with the 3-2 defeat at the hands of hosts AS Roma in the second leg of their Europa League last four tie. Manchester United qualified for the final of the competition in Gdansk, Poland on May 26 despite the defeat due to the four-goal lead from the first leg. Manchester United came from a 2-1 deficit at the half-time break to score five goals in the second half and win the game 6-2. In the second leg, Roma came from behind to beat their opponents 3-2 thus giving the English club an aggregate win of 8-5 over the two legs. Manchester United will face Villarreal from the Spanish La Liga in the final after they saw off English team Arsenal in their semi-final tie.

The Roma defeat was followed by the 3-1 away win over Aston Villa in the league before two successive defeats to Champions League chasers Leicester City and Liverpool at home in the league. They were beaten 2-1 by the Foxes before arch rivals Liverpool edged a six-goal thriller 4-2 away from home at the expense of the Old Trafford club to boost their quest to qualify for Europe’s premier club competition.
